Сержант Pepper got bored of the usual genre – now the sad Beatles veteran sings in a choir. The choir from Kharkov – academic, with an excellent school – sings cover versions of rock classics, from Iggy Pop to Nirvana, from Mercury to Yegor Letov. And they do it masterfully – for many, many years. On November 25, 2021, they recorded this piece – “Po utru v pole” by BG. Accompanied by a playful comment that Boris Borisovich writes music for the choir excellently. Thirteen weeks later – on February 24, 2022 – as soon as it began, their tenor’s house in Chuguev was destroyed. And just recently, it was hit into the apartment where they had recently filmed music videos. They continue to sing. In their social networks, they wrote: “Our plans include billions of records sold, worldwide recognition, and for everyone to be happy.” And we have chosen this piece by BG performed by a Ukrainian choir as the main Christmas anthem. That’s exactly what it is about. This recording seemed very Christmas and very Christian to us. And here’s what our friend and big fan of BG, Archpriest Andrey Kordochkin, thinks about it: – In the New Year’s address, I recalled the Gospel passage that is read at the New Year’s service: Jesus enters the synagogue and reads the prophecy of Isaiah, that He came into the world “to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” For me, this song is about fulfilling the prophecy, about a person who has insight, has been set free, and does not suffer from fruitless torments. “Who would tell about the journey of the heart, how it burned halfway to paradise,” of course, this is an allusion to the Gospel of Luke and the meeting of the Savior with the disciples who did not recognize Him: “And they said to each other, Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us.” Kharkiv, as is known, is a Russian-speaking city – or was until the present time. I looked into the Telegram channel of the guys and noticed that after February 2022, there was not a single post in Russian. So, what can we wish them, all of us, for Christmas? Let everything go back to how it was, let Grebenshchikov give concerts in Kyiv, and “Okean Elzy” perform in Moscow again? May God forbid. Things won’t be the same as before. Let them sing in any language, but most importantly – let them remain alive, and let their Kharkiv homes remain intact.
